We will be holding the event at the Moonfleet 2000 Indoor Bowls Club in Sunny Weymouth on the Dorset Coast and we thank them for their support, enthusiasm and hospitality for our World Record Attempt!
The Early Beginnings
In 1985 the owners of Moonfleet Manor hotel decided that they needed to attract more winter trade. They originally thought about constructing a badminton hall, but after advertising for a sport minded investor they were persuaded to build a 4 rink bowls hall.
Construction was completed in November 1986 and the world’s most famous bowler David Bryant officially opened the club.
The club attracted all of the top local bowlers in the area, as at that time there were no indoor facilities in the Weymouth area and many of the competitive bowlers travelled to Bridport or Yeovil to play.
Moonfleets players were very competitive, and amongst their National honours were winners of the Father and Son pairs and runners up in the Ladies two wood triples. They also were semi-finalists in the Egham Trophy and the Denny Cup. Whilst competing at the National finals of the Denny Cup the players heard the devastating news that the club had been given a years notice to leave the hotel. Later this was extended to two years. A new committee was formed which put together the Lottery bid and raised other funds to construct the new Moonfleet 2000 indoor bowls club.
The Building was funded from various sources. These included donations from the National Lottery, and the Sports Aid Foundation, loans from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, and National Westminster Bank. The clubs Founder Members, whose names appear above the main entrance door, who were very generous with donations and loans. Together they all helped pay for this wonderful building which cost nearly £1.2 million.
The club was officially opened by record breaking England International Andy Thomson on 22nd November 2000.
The club has had a lot of success since it opened in the National Championships. Twice winners in the over 50 triples competition, runner up in the Champion of champions, and over 60 singles. Two junior internationals one of which was given the honour of being England captain and one over 60 International. It has also been runner up in the National over 60’s double rink, Top Club, Leonard Denny double rink and Wessex league (three times). As well as being semi finalists in the club team knockouts, Denny Cup, Egham Trophy, Yetton Trophy. We have also provided semi- finalists in the over 60 pairs, mixed pairs and over 50 triples.
The club has also provided members of the Ladies and Junior county teams that have won the National inter county knockout competition twice. Members have also been part of the Men’s county team which has been a National runner up and semi-finalist.
Many other successes have come at county level in competitions ranging from under 25 singles ( 4 times) & Mixed pairs (8 times) to over 60’s double rink ( 8 times).
